MADRID, Oct 19 (KUNA) -- Spain's Minister of Interior Fernando Grande-Marlaska Gomez said Saturday that violent protesters attacked law enforcers over the last days and wounded 300 of them.
There was a fierce battle between rioters and security personnel yesterday, where 101 law enforcers and 81 rioters were wounded, the state-run Spanish Television and Radio Corporation (RTVE) quoted the minister as saying at the Barcelona police HQ.
The rioting has led also to extensive material damage across Catalonia since the start of the protests on Monday, the minister said, noting that 800 trucks were set ablaze and 264 police vehicles, including 171 vehicles yesterday, were damaged.
He noted that the security services responded with great finesse to the protests but will never allow any acts of ransack or rioting go unpunished.
Gomez met Minister of Interior of Catalonia Miquel Buch to get acquainted with the latest developments of the situation and visited the injured police members, according to RTVE. (pickup previous) hnd.gb
