NEW YORK, Sept 18 (KUNA) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Wednesday that several UN experts have left for Saudi Arabia to probe Saturday's attack on Saudi oil facilities.
Speaking at a news conference, Guterres said that the experts have already left for Saudi Arabia and will do their job according to the mandate given by the Security Council to them.
They were sent to Saudi Arabia in line with the UN Security Council which asks the UN chief to offer a report every six months on the implementation of the nuclear deal signed in 2015 regarding transferring weapons to and from Iran, he noted.
He renewed his condemnation of Saturday's attack on Aramco's facilities, describing it as a "dramatic escalation in the Gulf".
He indicated that this incident would have a simultaneous impact on the oil markets.
He pointed out that if there would be a major confrontation in the Gulf region, this would lead to devastating consequences for the region and the world.
The 2015 resolution which approved the nuclear deal signed between Iran and the major powers authorizes UN experts to probe suspected discoveries of Iran's military hardware. (end) asf.amm.hm
