ISLAMABAD, Aug 28 (KUNA) -- At least 14 pro-government fighters have been killed in an attack by Taliban rebels in Afghanistan's western Herat province, said an official on Wednesday.
The fighters were killed in Chahardara area of Rubat-e-Sangi district of Herat following an attack by a large number of Taliban fighters targeting security checkpoints.
A spokesman for the Herat police, Abdul Ahad Walizada confirming the attack said that at least nine others were wounded in the clashes and the Taliban fighters were pushed back after Afghan forces reinforced the area.
According to local media, Taliban rebels have claimed the responsibility of the attack.
The attack came at a time when the United States and Taliban are aiming to sign an agreement in Doha, Qatar; after months of negotiations to end the 18-year war in Afghanistan. (end) sbk.mt
