PARIS, July 5 (KUNA) - Kuwait won a seat on the Executive Council of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), Kuwaiti Permanent Representative to UNESCO Dr. Adam Al-Mullah said on Friday.
In a statement to KUNA, Dr. Al-Mullah noted that the committee is composed of 150 member states and divided into five groups, with Kuwait participating in the fifth group with 46 countries.
The executive board of the committee includes 40 seats, including nine seats allocated to the fifth group, he said, indicating that Kuwait won one of the seats in the elections, with participation of 12 countries, he added.
Kuwait joined the IOC on 13 November 1974 and was elected as a member of the Executive Council in 2017, said Dr. Al-Mullah.
Dr. Al-Mullah pointed out that the committee established by UNESCO in 1960 had strengthened international cooperation and program coordination in marine research and ocean and coastal resource management.
He expressed gratitude for the confidence of the member states in Kuwait, stressing the commitment to cooperate with all in the IOC to achieve the goals of sustainable development. (end) mjz.aa
