LONDON, June 25 (KUNA) -- The British government on Tuesday announced an additional 19 million pounds (USD 24.2 million) to support the efforts of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
Britain's total aid to UNRWA for the period between 2019 and 2020 has now risen to 65.5 million pounds (USD 83.53 million), said British State Secretary for Middle East and North Africa Andrew Morrison in a press release.
Morrison noted that British aid was aimed at helping to achieve the UN Agency's goals of ending hunger and extreme poverty by providing food and direct financial assistance, as well as providing health care and education.
The aid would guarantee a large number of Palestinian families a minimum of food and more than half a million children in their schools, as well as providing health care for three million refugees, he added.
The British minister warned that the Palestinians are living in an unprecedented difficult situation, while UNRWA faces challenges that could hamper its ability to provide the necessary aid to the people in the Gaza Strip, calling on international donors to double their aid to the Agency in these tough circumstances.
