NEW YORK, April 25 (KUNA) -- Kuwait stressed the importance of multilateral diplomacy at regional and international levels and the need to strengthen collective action to face regional and global challenges.
This came in a speech delivered by Kuwait's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Bader Al-Munayekh at the High-Level Plenary Meeting of the General Assembly to Commemorate the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace.
He underlined the UN role in leading a global action to face the world challenges, including a humanitarian action to alleviate the suffering of people during armed conflicts and natural disasters.
Al-Munayekh said the UN also plays a role in facing the effects of climate change, the promotion of human rights and the rule of law, adding that there can be no progress on these issues without engaging effectively in collective action and constructive dialogue.
"The world today faces contemporary challenges and transboundary threats, more complex than in the past," he said, adding that peace and security threats have been in a rising pattern over the past years.
"To achieve the goals of sustainable development, climate change and other issues, we need global concerted efforts," He said.
"Multilateralism is the core of the global system", he confirmed, adding that the cornerstone of this multilateral system is the Charter of the United Nations, which sets out a clear framework for regulating relations between nations.
He referred to Kuwait liberation in 1991, which is "an example of what can be achieved when the efforts of the international community come together under the umbrella of the United Nations, and through legitimate resolutions of the Security Council", he said. (end) asf.haq
