CAIRO, March 22 (KUNA) -- Egypt on Friday echoed its previous position that the Syrian Golan Heights are an occupied Arab territory.
"Golan is an occupied land in line with international legitimacy resolutions, chiefly United National Security Council Resolution 497/1981 which declared Israel's decision to impose its laws and judicial sovereignty and administration over the occupied Syrian Golan, as null and void," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
It emphasized that the international community should respect international legitimacy resolutions and the UN Charter by rejecting any bid to take over territories by force.
The Egyptian move came after US President Donald Trump hinted Thursday that Washington could recognize Israel's sovereignty over Golan.
"After 52 years it is time for the United States to fully recognize Israel's Sovereignty over the Golan Heights, which is of critical strategic and security importance to the State of Israel and Regional Stability," Trump tweeted.
The US president made the remark just days before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to join him at the White House and followed weeks during which Netanyahu has pressed the US anew to recognize Syria's Golan Heights as part of Israel. (end) aff.mt
