BRUSSELS, Dec 7 (KUNA) -- A top-ranking UN counter-terrorism official Friday warned of the continued serious threat of terrorism to the world.
"If we follow the newspapers we see the scourge of terrorism remains very high. This threat is not decreasing and because of the splintering of the activities and different methods used by the terrorist groups it becomes a thing of high risks," Michele Coninsx, UN Assistant Secretary-General and Executive Director of the Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) told a news conference.
"It is extremely global. It is extremely complex. We work on it with all possible means," she said.
Coninsx noted that that every single week there is a bomb attack somewhere.
"Iraq is an example. There were also attacks in Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast. These are regions which have been confronted by huge terrorist threats mixed with criminal armed groups. In Afghanistan there is a terrorist attack every single week," said the UN official.
"The Middle East is an areas which is in confrontation with terrorism and we have to address this terrorist threat," she added.
Coninsx also spoke about global responses to fight terrorism, CTED's work in this critical area, and an upcoming Special meeting of the UN Counter-Terrorism Committee on reviewing the so-called Madrid Guiding Principles on foreign terrorist fighters. (end) nk.sd
