RIYADH, June 24 (KUNA) -- The Saudi-led Coalition aiming to restore legitimacy in Yemen said on Sunday it shot down two ballistic missiles fired from within Yemen that were targeting the Saudi capital, Riyadh.
The coalition's joint air force defence forces detected the attack at 20:39 (local time) which originated from Yemen's northwestern city of Saada, spokesman Col Turki Al-Malki was quoted by the Saudi Press Agency as saying in a statement.
The missiles were fired "deliberately," Al-Malki said, and were targeting civilian-populated areas. Resulting debris after the missiles were destroyed did not result in any casualties amongst occupants in the surrounding residential areas, he confirmed.
The spokesman described the attack as an "act of aggression" by the "terrorist Houthi militia," which he said implicates Iran in its support of the armed group, by providing them with advanced capabilities.
"Iran's support is a blatant and clear breach of UN resolutions 2216 and 2231, and is aimed at threatening the security of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and regional and international security, while firing ballistic missiles on civilian-populated areas runs contrary to international and humanitarian laws," he said.
