BRUSSELS, April 23 (KUNA) -- A court in Brussels Monday found Salah Abdeslam and Sofien Ayari guilty of attempted terrorist murder and sentenced them to 20 years in jail.
The judge ruled that the shoot-out with the police in a flat the Brussels suburb of Vorst, in March 2016 in a residential area with a school in the area, intended to intimidate the population.
The police exchanged fire with the three occupants of the flat. One of the three Mohamed Belkaid an Algerian was killed and three police officers wounded.
The two convicted men now have a month in which to appeal their sentence. In addition, the two were ordered to pay the police officer who was badly injured in the shoot-out 315,000 euros and to pay the Belgian state 142,000 euros.
Other officers injured should receive payments between 10,000 and 15,000 euros, the court ruled. (end) nk.gta
