WASHINGTON, MARCH 21 (KUNA) -- The United States strongly condemned the "shameful" attack at Kabul University in Afghanistan on Wednesday that killed at least 28 people and left many wounded.
"This shameful attack on a peaceful gathering to celebrate Nowruz has marred the new year with pain and tragedy," according to a statement from State Department spokesperson Heath Nauert. "Our thoughts are with the families of the victims who were injured and killed, and we mourn all those who lost their lives in this senseless attack."
Afghani officials confirmed a suicide bomber detonated an explosive close to the Ali Abad Hospital and Kabul University. The so-called Islamic State terrorist group claimed responsibility for the mid-day attack, which injured as many as 65 men, children and women.
The US pledged to stand with the people of Afghanistan, according to Nauert, "we remain firmly committed to supporting the Afghan people's efforts to achieve peace, security, and prosperity for their country." (end)
