NEW YORK, March 12 (KUNA) -- The UN Security Council (UNSC) will hold a session later on Monday to discuss the implementation of resolution 2401 to ceasefire for at least 30 days to enable humanitarian aid delivery.
The resolution, presented by Kuwait and Sweden, was adopted by UNSC on February 24. It calls on all conflicting parties in Syria to cease hostilities without delay to enable delivery of aid and mobilizing of the critically sick and wounded. It also demands an immediate lifting of siege on populated areas.
During the session, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres will shed light on the ongoing violence and killings in Syria, especially in eastern Ghouta and the air raids on Damascus.
Last week, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs presented a report to the UNSC on the failure to deliver aid to Ghouta by UN trucks, the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent on March 5, due to the continuous violence and raids.
According to the World Health Organization, the Syrian regime is preventing humanitarian and medical aid from reaching civilians in need.
Meanwhile, Russia's previous initiative to allow a five-hour ceasefire daily in eastern Ghouta did not help in halting violence to allow the entry of aid.
Resolution 2401 affirms that the cessation of hostilities would not apply to military operations against the so-called Islamic State, Al-Qaeda and all other terrorist groups. (end) asf.ag
