NEW YORK, Sept 28 (KUNA) -- A senior UN official Thursday called for strengthening international counter-terrorism cooperation, including exchange of information and practices, as well as tackling cyber-terrorism and enhance inter-cultural dialogue.
Vladimir Voronkov, Under Secretary General of the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism (OCT), also called for preventing violent extremism conducive to terrorism and addressing foreign terrorist fighters' threats.
He was speaking before a session of the UN Security Council to discuss the implementation of UNSC Resolution 1373, which criminalized terrorism financing, stipulated legal action against persons supported terrorists and urged UN members to exchange information over terrorists.
The resolution, adopted in 2001, also set up a committee within the UNSC to monitor implementation of the resolution.
Voronkov welcomed UNSC for its engagement in international counter-terrorism action, and said the OCT, which was formed by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres as part of his reform plans, would work closely with all member countries to address the terrorist threats.
He said all UN bodies and agencies should join hands to ensure effective counter-terrorism action.
UN member countries, he added, should mobilize necessary political will and resources to strengthen this action, particularly through full implementation of terrorism-related resolutions and conventions.
Arab, Muslim and American leaders met in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, last May and opened a counter-terrorism center designed to step up the fight against all forms of terrorism. (end) bs.asf
