CAIRO, Feb 26 (KUNA) -- Arab League Secretary General Ahmad Abul-Gheit has called for joining efforts to preserve the heritage and civilization of the Arab nation.
This is a priority of the Arab national security at its broad meaning, Abul-Gheit told a ceremony held at the Arab League in Cairo Sunday to mark the Arab Heritage Day.
The secretary general warned against extremist and terror plans that seek to destroy the Arab nation's cultural heritage, targeting its past and present so that it could fall a prey to benighted calls.
On March 5, 2016, the Arab League's Ministerial Council decided to mark the Arab Heritage Day on February 27 every year.
The choice of the day was symbolic, Abul-Gheit said. On that day two years ago, "hands of extremism and barbarism destroyed Iraq's Mosul Museum," he said.
The destruction and the sabotage of the artefacts at the museum were loss to the entire humanity, he stressed.
Abul-Gheit referred to a previous resolution of choosing an annual capital of the Arab culture in a bid to consolidate the concept of maintaining the Arab heritage.
Egypt's Luxor is the Capital of the Arab Culture 2017. Addressing the ceremony, Egypt's Minister of Culture Helmi Al-Namnam, called for crystalizing a work plan for preserving the heritage of the Arab nation against the outstanding extremist and terror threats.
The Kuwaiti delegation to the Arab Heritage Day Celebrations is led by the country's representative to the UNESCO's World Heritage Committee, Walid Hamad Al-Seif, who is also Advisor to the Secretary General of the Kuwaiti National Council of Culture, Arts and Letters (NCCAL). (end) mfm.asm.msa
