BRUSSELS, Feb 21 (KUNA) -- EU High Representative Federica Mogherini spoke Tuesday with the new President of Somalia Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed Farmaajo ahead of his inauguration tomorrow.
Mogherini in a statement wished him every success for his mandate and welcomed the peaceful transition.
The EU foreign policy chief reiterated that the EU will remain engaged as Somalia urgently needs to develop its security sector, deliver an economic reform that addresses high levels of corruption as well as complete the constitutional review.
The EU supported stipends to 6,800 police in Somalia have just been paid, she said and also expressed to the President the commitment of the EU to help Somalia address the effects of the drought and avert the declaration of famine.
The EU is currently mobilising support to address the current famine amounting to a total of about 100 million euro.
Mogherini agreed with President Farmaajo to continue working closely together, noted the statement. (end) nk.gb
