NEW YORK, Nov 15 (KUNA) -- UN announced incremental limited return of the UN Disengagement Observer Force's (UNDOF) to Camp Faouar.
UNDOF was established by Security Council resolution in order to maintain the ceasefire between Israel and Syria, supervise the disengagement of Israeli and Syrian forces, and supervise the areas of separation and limitation, as provided in the May 1974 Agreement on Disengagement. However due to dangerous security environment, the mission had to withdraw from certain areas to ensure the safety of the peacekeepers.
UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq said the limited return that commenced Monday was in accordance with Security Council resolution 2294 of this year. The resolution requested the UN Secretary General to expedite preparations for the return of an UNDOF presence to Camp Faouar, conditions permitting, following its temporary relocation from a number of positions in September 2014.
"Both parties to the Disengagement Agreement continue to support UNDOF's return to Camp Faouar," Haq added.
In several occasions, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon condemned all violations of the Disengagement of Forces Agreement and called on all concerned to refrain from any action that jeopardizes the ceasefire between Israel and Syria and undermines the stability of the area.
Ban also called on all involved to exercise maximum restraint to prevent any further escalation in an already tense regional environment. (end) mao.hb
