NEW YORK, Sept 21 (KUNA) -- Kuwait on Wednesday reiterated commitment to a UN-brokered political solution in Yemen in line with the GCC initiative and its implementation mechanism, UN resolution 2216 and national dialogue outcome.
"We reaffirm our support for the political solution under the UN sponsorship and line with the outcome of the national dialogue, the initiative of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and its implementation mechanism, and UN Security Council resolution 2216," Representative of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah said in a speech before the UN General Assembly.
He noted that Kuwait hosted UN-brokered talks among the Yemeni parties - the legitimate government, Ansarullah and the General People's Congress (GPC) - between April and August this year with the aim of restoring security and stability in Yemen.
Kuwait's hosting of the talks, said His Highness the Prime Minister, was out of keenness in the independence, sovereignty and territorial unity of Yemen to ultimately reach a political solution.
His Highness the Prime Minister commended UN envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Sheikh Ahmad for his relentless efforts to bring about peace in Yemen.
"We reiterate our support for the UN Secretary General's Envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Sheikh Ahmad, and called for doubling of efforts to resume the UN-sponsored dialogue among the Yemeni parties as soon as possible," he said.
The situation in Yemen has been deteriorating since Ansarullah took over the capital Sanaa in a coup d'etat that was not recognized by the international community.
An Arab coalition has waged a military offensive against Ansarullah and former President Ali Abdullah Saleh's forces in a bid to restore the legitimate leadership of President Abd Rabbu Mansur Hadi.
The coalition then carried out a humanitarian operation aimed at helping millions of Yemeni people in dire need of assistance.
Kuwait, as instructed by His Highness the Amir, allocated USD 100 million to help the Yemeni people. (end) mao.bs
