NEW YORK, Sept 19 (KUNA) -- UN special envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Sheikh Ahmad has described the humanitarian situation in Yemen as "disastrous." There are 21 million Yemenis out of a 25 million-soul population, in need for humanitarian, aid as the situation in the conflict-ridden country was "disastrous," Ould Sheikh Ahmad said in a statement to KUNA after a meeting with Kuwait's First Deputy premier and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah.
He briefed Sheikh Sabah Khaled about latest developments related to the Yemeni file in the wake of his meetings in Muscat, capital of Oman, and the Saudi cities of Riyadh and Jeddah.
"There is a flurry of diplomacy regarding the Yemeni issue specially following the Jeddah meeting," he said.
Ould Sheikh Ahmad commended Kuwait's support of the Yemeni just cause, and its readiness to always contribute to solving the conflict in Yemen.
He meanwhile said violations of the ceasefire in Yemen were blocking delivery of aid for the people "who are desperate for humanitarian, medical and food supplies." The UN envoy said preparations were ongoing for a meeting over Yemen on September 21, to be held on sidelines of the UN General Assembly's (UNGA) 71st session.
The meeting with Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled was attended by Assistant Foreign Minister for Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled's office Ambassador Sheikh Dr. Ahmad Nasser Mohammad Al-Sabah, Assistant foreign minister for GCC affairs Nasser Al-Muzayyen and Kuwait's permanent representative to the UN Mansour Al-Otaibi.
