NEW YORK, Sept 15 (KUNA) -- Saudi Arabia called on the Security Council to shoulder its responsibility and take the appropriate and the necessary measures against the spoilers of the Yemeni political transition and those who have violated the relevant resolutions in this matter.
This came in a letter addressed to the Security Council President Gerard van Bohemen of New Zealand, urging the Council to take all necessary measures to demand that Iran complies with all the relevant Security Council resolutions, cease and desist from any illegal actions in Yemen.
Saudi Permanent Representative Ambassador Abdullah Al-Mouallimi, highlighted in the letter that his country has been the victim of Houthi militias rebels and forces loyal to former president Ali Saleh's indiscriminate and irresponsible targeting, including rocket attacks and ballistic missile attacks, on the Saudi border as well as within Saudi Arabiaآ’s territorial limits.
Such acts have resulted in hundreds of civilian fatalities, destruction of civilian infrastructure including damage to schools and hospitals.
In violation of Security Council resolution 2216, the Saudi official said weapons and ammunition have been supplied to the Houthi rebel militias in Yemen by Iran. "On multiple occasion, Iranian illicit weapons were intercepted by several Member States and the Combined Maritime Force," he added. These maritime seizures of weapons, he said, including by Australia, France and the US, "uncovered huge shipments of illicit arms confirmed to have originated in Iran." Stating all these violations, the Saudi official reaffirmed in the letter his countryآ’s right to "take all appropriate measures to counter the threats by the Iran-funded and backed Houthi-Saleh rebel militias and will spare no effort in protecting the security and safety of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Yemen and its people, and the region." In the Saudi letter, Ambassador Al-Mouallimi said the Houthi rebel militias and forces loyal to the former President Ali Abdullah Saleh and their foreign ally must be held accountable for their continuous irresponsible and criminal behavior. "Complacency will only encourage further violation jeopardizing the safety and security of the Yemeni people, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the region," he added.
Therefore, the Gulf Kingdom reiterated its support to the important work of the Special Envoy of the Secretary General for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, to reach a comprehensive agreement to end the conflict in Yemen, according to the Gulf Cooperation Council's Initiative, the Outcome of the National Dialogue and its implementation Mechanism and the relevant Sector Council resolutions.
