KUWAIT, May 3 (KUNA) -- UN envoy to Yemen, Ismael Ould Cheikh Ahmed said he had met Yemeni parties participating in the peace consultations in Kuwait to develop a strategic framework to combine the proposals of the two delegations and narrow the gap and contribute to finding a quick solution to the issue of the "Al-Amaliqa" military base.
The envoy said in a statement distributed at dawn today following his meeting with delegations of the Yemeni government, the General People's Congress and Ansarullah movement, as well as political and diplomatic figures that the general framework established by the UN is based on common ground and paves way for a comprehensive, political and strategic path that would assure citizens "security and political stability." He said, "We are currently discussing this general framework through bilateral meetings with the Yemeni parties till we can define their priorities and build on the common ground." He said he also met with Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Dr. Abdullatif Al-Zayani and discussed with him the developments of the peace talks relying on his usual support for the efforts of the United Nations and on his long experience in dealing with the Yemeni file.
The Yemeni government delegation suspended its participation in the UN-brokered peace negotiations currently hosted by Kuwait due to incidents that took place in the province of Orman, the UN envoy announced on Sunday.
The anti-government forces have reportedly took over Al-Amaliqa military base late last night in the province of Orman.
Despite the positive atmospheres prevailed over the last days, the delegation of Yemeni government suspended its participation in the joint sessions due to these incidents, UN Secretary General's Special Envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmad said in a press statement.
Ould Cheikh Ahmad expressed his understanding for the causes of this decision taken by the government's delegation, urging all parties to show "goodwill" during the talks on which Yemenis are pinning their hopes. (end) rkf.tg
