JEDDAH, Feb 23 (KUNA) -- A Saudi border guard was shot dead on Tuesday when his patrol came under heavy fire from the Yemeni side of the borders, spokesman of the Ministry of Interior announced.
The incident took place in Khabbash sector of the borders with Yemen in Najran area this midday, the spokesman said, identifying the soldier as Corporal Abakr Rabah Abakr.
The border guards responded appropriately to the source of fire and forced the hostile elements to flee the scene. Separately, the Saudi police forces killed a wanted terrorist element in a crackdown in eastern Al-Awamiyah town.
The man, identified by the Interior Ministry's spokesman as Ali Mahmoud Abdullah, is a Bahraini national who was involved in terrorist activities in Al-Qatif.
Acting on tips, the security services stormed a farm in the town but the man tried to resist the forces and opened fire at them.
The policemen responded promptly to the fire and killed him on the spot, the spokesman said, adding that the policemen seized a machinegun and a pistol in his possession. (end) nh.gb
