KUWAIT, Nov 16 (KUNA) -- Four Arab researchers and four Kuwaiti ones have been awarded the 2015 Kuwait Prize and Scientific Production Prize, the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) announced on Monday.
His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah has endorsed recommendations of KFAS board of directors on winners of the two prizes 2015, KFAS Director General Dr. Adnan Shehab-Eddine told KUNA.
Four Arab researchers were awarded the Kuwait Prize this year; Syrian Huda Fakher Akel, Syrian, Basic Sciences; Egyptian Hesham Mohammad Al-Tuni, Applied Sciences (water); Palestinian Sari Abdulrahman Hanafi, Economics and Social Sciences, and Mona Al-Said Baker, Art and Literature, Shehab-Eddine said.
Four Kuwaiti researchers were offered the Scientific Production Prize 2015; Abdulazeem Mohammad Marafi, Engineering Sciences; Dina Musa'ed Al-Mailm, Biological Sciences; Fahd Rashed Al-Mullah, Medical Sciences and Osman Humoud Al-Khedr in Social Sciences and Humanities.
The Kuwait Prize was established in 1979, in line with KFAS goals to support scientific researches in various fields, and to encourage Arab scholars and researchers.
KFAS has dedicated prizes in five fields; four are announced annually - Basic Sciences, Applied Sciences, Economics and Social Sciences, Art and literature- while the fifth field, Arabic and Islamic Scientific Heritage, is announced every three years. The topics of the fields are subject to change annually.
As for the Scientific Production Prize, it was established in 1988 in response to an initiative by His Highness the Amir to honor distinguished Kuwaitis holding a doctorate degree in various fields of knowledge.
It is intended to encourage the elite of the Kuwaiti scientific community to further pursue research for the benefit of the society.
KFAS offers the Prize in each of the following six areas in accordance with the requirements approved by its Board of Directors: Physical Sciences and Mathematics, Engineering Sciences, Biological Sciences, Medical Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities, and Administration and Economics.
