KUWAIT, Sept 16 (KUNA) -- US authorities have expressed keenness on releasing, Fayez Al-Kanderi, the last remaining Kuwaiti detainee at Guantanamo prison, Kuwaiti Ambassador Sheikh Salem Abdullah Al-Jaber Al-Sabah revealed on Wednesday.
The Kuwaiti Embassy in Washington will "continue its contacts with relevant US authorities in order to monitor the continuation of procedures for the release process of the detained, Fayez Al-Kanderi, until he is brought to Kuwait," read a statement by the ambassador.
The decision to release Al-Kanderi came in response to the directions of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and his commitment to maintaining close contact, aimed at resolving the issue, with both former US president George Bush and current President Barack Obama, he said.
It was also as a result of the non-stop efforts of First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, he added.
The development was described as "positive to Kuwait-US bilateral relations", and a closed chapter to a matter, he regarded as "sensitive" on the list of the Kuwaiti government's priorities, which has lasted a few years. (end) sd
