KUWAIT, May 25 (KUNA) -- The use of solar power in water desalination is "a logical solution to drinking water shortage," Director General of the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) Dr. Naji Al-Mutairi has said.
Al-Mutairi made the statement at a workshop on Monday, organized by THE KISR's Water Research Center on the use of solar power in desalination.
He stressed the momentousness of implementing a MoU signed with French universities and research institutions for cooperation in solar energy. A similar one has recently been signed with a South Korean university.
The KISR top official expected the workshop to help promote the KISR's relations with partners from Germany, Italy and Singapore for more cooperation in the vital field, as well as exchanging data and views.
Al-Mutairi revealed that KISR had designed, installed and operated am experimental water desalination plant at the site of the Water Research Center. The plant aims at testing research outcome and the technical and economic feasibility of using solar power for water desalination.
This is one of the model projects adopted by the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) as part of an initiative to foster the use of solar power for generating electricity in Kuwait, KFAS Director General Dr. Adnan Shihab-Eldin told the event.
The project comes in line with directives by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who is also KFAS Chairman, to give priority to benefiting from sources of renewable energy.
In the meantime, KFAS has recently adopted a host of model projects on solar power for promoting the use of photovoltaics systems to produce electricity, other at home or coops, in a bid to lessen pressure on the state electricity grid. (end) mf.aas.msa
