BAGHDAD, April 24 (KUNA) -- A wide scale military operation has been launched to liberate east Fallujah's Al-Karma district from the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), an Iraqi security source said on Friday.
The announcement by a Baghdad Operations Command source to KUNA comes as ISIL insurgents has opened two of the Tharthar Dam 33 sluice gates, so that water would flood nearby villages, to stop the Iraqi forces.
The operation involves army and police forces, tribesmen and popular crowds. They are making progress towards Al-Karma after causing ISIL huge casualties and loss of equipment, backed by airstrikes from the international coalition and the Iraqi army, the source noted.
Meanwhile, Iraqi Parliament Speaker Salim Al-Jabouri urged Washington to provide more assistance to maintain the victories achieved in Al-Anbar and Salah-Eddin provinces, as well as proceeding to fresh ones.
Al-Jabouri made the call during a meeting with US ambassador in Iraq Stuart Jones, according to a statement by the chief parliamentarian's office.
They tackled latest developments in both regions, where ISIL is the target of military operations, backed by the coalition's air attacks.
In the meantime, UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Iraq Lise Grande has led a delegation from the international organization in an inspection visit to recently-established camps for displaced Iraqis from the two cities of Al-Ramadi and Al-Fallujah., according to a statement by the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) here today.
