The University established the Award in 2011, under the leadership of the Institute for Global Leadership, to recognize global leaders who have dedicated their efforts to fostering the development of a united and peaceful future for all peoples.
The inaugural recipient of the Award was the Nobel Laureate for Peace, the Hon. Martti Ahtisaari, the former President of Finland.
The Award was presented to Sheikh Dr. Mohammed during the Institute's 28th annual international Norris and Margery Bendetson Symposium, held from February 27- March 2nd, which focused on the future of the Middle East and North Africa.
Sheikh Dr. Mohammed, who holds a PhD in economics from Harvard University, was invited to the Symposium to also share his "distinctive insights into the complex dynamics shaping the region since the Arab Spring." The annual Symposium attracts scores of international leaders, practitioners, academics, public intellectuals, and journalists who engage in an intellectually wide-ranging and intentionally diverse exchange through presentations, panel discussions, topical forums, and informal gatherings.
The Institute's goal is to prepare new generations of critical thinkers for effective and ethical leadership, who are able to comprehend and deal with complexity, bridge cultural and political differences, and engage as responsible global citizens in anticipating and confronting national and international challenges.
The Institute is at the forefront of "thinking beyond boundaries and acting across borders," due to its unique approaches and ability to create unusual partnerships and juxtapositions. Tufts University, established in 1852, is a private university with three campuses in the US State of Massachusetts and one campus in France. The total number of students is 10,837, including 1,348 international students. It is dedicated to educating new leaders for a changing world. (end) sj.tg KUNA 030928 Mar 14NNNN
