JEDDAH, Oct 30 (KUNA) -- The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has
acquired a permanent observer seat at the General Assembly of the Internet
Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the Organization announced
on Wednesday.
In a cable directed to OIC Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, Heather
Dryden, Chairman of ICANN Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC), welcomed the
organization's joining ICANN, OIC noted in a statement.
The Islamic organization is expected to take part at GAC's regular meetings
at ICANN, including the meeting that is set to take place in Buenos Aires,
Argentina on November 16, added the statement.
ICANN coordinates the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) functions,
which are key technical services critical to the continued operations of the
Internet's underlying address book, the Domain Name System (DNS).
Besides providing technical operations of vital DNS resources, ICANN also
defines policies for how the names and numbers of the Internet should run.
