ISLAMABAD, Sept 29 (KUNA) -- A US-led drone strike killed three militants in northern Pakistani tribal region bordering Afghanistan, it was announced on Sunday.
A senior security official said in a press statement that a US drone fired two missiles on a militant compound, killing three rebels in North Waziristan tribal region. The drone strike targeted the compound of the militants in Dargamandi area, seven kilometres north of the main town of Miranshah.
The area targeted by the drone is said to be a stronghold of militants and some local media reports put the death toll by the drone strike to four.
Drone attacks are deeply unpopular in Pakistan and condemned by the authorities several times but US considers these strikes vital in the war against terrorism.
The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Muhammad Nawaz Sharif on Friday called for an end to drone strikes on Pakistani soil in an address to the United Nations General Assembly.
He said, "The use of armed drones in the border areas of Pakistan is a continued violation of our territorial integrity. It results in casualties of innocent civilians and is detrimental to our resolve and efforts to eliminate extremism and terrorism from Pakistan. I have urged the United States to cease these strikes, so that we could avert further casualties and suffering." (end) sbk.tg KUNA 291216 Sep 13NNNN
