CAIRO, June 3 (KUNA) -- Hundreds of Egyptian judges and prosecutors on Monday organized a protest in front of the Supreme Judicial House over a fresh judicial draft law.
Among the protesters are President of the Judges' Club Justice Ahmad Al-Zend, members of the club and several other court judges.
Thousands of citizens joined the protest as a sign of support for Egyptian judges in their struggle against a controversial judicial bill which the Shura Council, the acting legislature in Egypt following the dissolution of parliament, insists on discussing it in spite of large-scale judicial opposition.
Addressing the rally, Al-Zend said the protest aimed to "shed light on the suffering of the Egyptian judiciary and attempts to undermine it." "The people of Egypt, with all their spectra, totally support and defend the judges of Egypt," he claimed.
However, he challenged that those who are seeking to undermine the Egyptian judiciary would fail to do so.
Earlier on Sunday, the Constitutional Court ruled that the Shura Council is "unconstitutional", but stipulated that the council can continue functioning until a new parliament is elected. (end) rg.mt KUNA 032305 Jun 13NNNN
