BRUSSELS, April 16 (KUNA) -- The European Parliament today adopted with huge majority the temporary exemption on the carbon tax, known as European Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) for aviation.
Intercontinental flights landing and starting in Europe will be exempted for one year from the obligations of the emissions trading scheme.
With this move the EU wants to make easier an agreement with third countries at this year's general assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) said the author of the draft law, Peter Liese.
The goal is a global agreement for emissions reductions, said Liese.
The EU unilaterally introduced the ETS in January 2012, but 26 of the ICAO's 36 members opposed it, saying the carbon tax violated international law. (end) nk.bs KUNA 162318 Apr 13NNNN
