NEW DELHI, Dec 29 (KUNA) -- The 23-year-old girl who was gang-raped on December 16th in New Delhi died Saturday morning, announced Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit here. After battling for life for ten days at a Delhi hospital, the victim was airlifted to a super-specialty hospital in Singapore two days ago.
The remains of the girl are likely to be flown back to Delhi by today's evening.
The gory rape case had evoked angry protests across the country, particularly in New Delhi. After nearly four-days of violent protests during one Delhi Police cop died and hundreds of protesters injured, peaceful protesters are still carrying on campaign against crimes-against-women in the country.
The country's top leadership, including President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit have expressed their condolences to the girl's grieved family, and promised all possible help.
Besides raping her, the six men had also beaten her up mercilessly with iron rods inside a moving bus on the fateful night of December 16th. After committing the brutal crime, the perpetrators dumped her in an unconscious manner at a secluded place by a roadside. The victim's male companion was also beaten up black and blue and dumped along with her.
Taking into consideration the angry protests on Delhi streets, mainly at the seat of Indian Government "Raisina Hill", unprecedented security arrangements have been made today on Delhi roads to keep protesters away. As many as ten Metro Stations near Raisina Hill have been shut down, and traffic diverted away from roads leading to key government offices and ministries. (end) py.gta KUNA 290926 Dec 12NNNN
