KUWAIT, Oct 17 (KUNA) -- The Secretary General of Kuwait's National
Assembly Alam Al-Kandari reiterated Wednesday Kuwait's call for a UN
resolution to criminalize defamation of religions.
In press statements, Al-Kandari said the recent anti-Islam movie and the
violent incidents which it triggered around the world have highlighted the
need for such an international legislation.
Kandari is heading Kuwait's parliamentary delegation to the International
Inter-Parliamentary Union's 127th Assembly meeting to be held in the Canadian
city of Quebec on October 18-26.
He urged all UN member states to back the draft resolution presented by the
Muslim and Arab countries in this regard.
"This proposed resolution is meant to promote inter-faith dialogue,
understanding and peaceful coexistence among followers of the different
religions," he said.
The Quebec meeting will elect the President and Vice-Presidents of the
127th Assembly.
The assembly agenda includes a special debate on citizenship, identity and
linguistic and cultural diversity in a globalized world.
It will also discuss the role of parliament in safeguarding civilians'
lives; fair trade and innovative financing mechanisms for sustainable
development; and the use of media, including social media, to enhance citizen
engagement and democracy. (end)
