KUWAIT, Oct 16 (KUNA) -- Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) is
to set up a program to fight children obesity through the assessment of school
meals, meals consumption and physical education classes.
Head of the project Dr. Lina Davidson told KUNA, on Tuesday, that "the idea
behind the program followed a nutrition survey conducted on 1,800 individuals.
" Results of the survey showed that 30 percent of children are obese.
The program, sponsored by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA),
focuses on the concept of fighting obesity in children by estimating total
energy exertion and calculating the Body Mass Index (BMI) and bone mineral
density by the use of nuclear measuring techniques.
Dr. Davidson noted that six elementary schools and 300 students will be
chosen to engage in the one-year program.
The program's six-member team, three researchers from KISR and three from
the Ministry of Health, will carry out regular checkup visits to schools to
evaluate the program progression. (end)
