ANKARA, Sept 4 (KUNA) -- Experts from the UN nuclear watchdog visited
Turkey's nuclear reactor's location Tuesday to get acquainted with the
construction progress.
The International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) experts visited the Akkuyu
Nuclear Power Plant site near the Mediterranean, in Mersin province, where
preparations were underway for laying foundation of Turkey's first reactor,
due to be operational by 2015.
A statement by the governor of Mersin said the experts got acquainted with
the project which was implemented by a Russian company by around USD 20
billion. The reactor is expected to produce 4,800 megawatts.
The experts voiced satisfaction with the safety measures in the location.
This is the first visit by IAEA experts since the Turkish and Russian
government signed a 20-year-old agreement in May 2010. (end)
