BEIRUT, May 20 (KUNA) -- Protesters blocked roads with burning tires in some suburbs of Beirut and major roads in other areas after Lebanese army forces shot dead a Sunni cleric, while education minister announced closure of schools and universities tomorrow.
Sheikh Ahmad Abdulwahed and his companion were shot dead by army forces after they refused to stop at a check point in north Lebanon. They were heading to a political rally organized by the Future party.
The Islamic Waqf department in Akkar, north Lebanon, mourned Abdulwahed and called for an "accurate and transparent" investigation to punish those responsible for the killing.
The department, in a statement, called for organizing a nation-wide strike tomorrow in protest of the killing. It announced a three-day mourning period. (end) mah.bs KUNA 202231 May 12NNNN
