UNITED NATIONS, March 1st (KUNA) -- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is scheduled to report to the General Assembly orally tomorrow Friday on whether Syria has implemented the resolution it adopted two weeks ago, UN spokesman Martin Nesirky told the daily press briefing on Thursday.
The Assembly overwhelmingly adopted a resolution on February 16 "strongly condemning" human rights violations by the Syrian authorities against civilians, demanding, among other things, an end to the violence, and calling for accountability and for support to the Arab League decision last month to resolve the current political crisis in Syria peacefully through a Syrian-led transition to a democratic political system.
Ban's oral report is expected to be negative, diplomats said, because Damascus has not implemented any of its demands.
The Assembly requested the Secretary-General to report on the implementation of that resolution, in consultation with the League, within 15 days of its adoption, which coincides tomorrow.
The Assembly acted after the Security Council failed twice to adopt similar resolutions last October and February, because of Russian and Chinese vetoes. The diplomats said they would have preferred that Ban's report be in writing, not oral, so that it can be referred to as an official document in future UN resolutions.
