JEDDAH, Jan 4 (KUNA) -- A number of international humanitarian organizations in the Member States of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) have rushed to respond to the flash appeal launched by the OIC last Monday to provide urgent medical aid to the Gaza Strip, which is facing an unprecedented health crisis.
Assistant Secretary General for International Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs in the Organization Ambassador Ataa Mannan Bakheet said in a statement that the organization has received inquiries from many humanitarian organizations in the Member States, including Kuwait, UAE, Egypt, Qatar and Turkey.
He pointed out that the Organization also received inquiries from a number of good samaritans on the possibility of contributing to the urgent medical aid for the relief of patients in the Gaza Strip, adding that the organization is also coordinating in this regard with the competent authorities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Ambassador Bakheet announced the readiness of coordination offices for humanitarian assistance of the Organization in Cairo and Gaza to take over the delivery of assistance required to facilitate their access to the concerned authorities in the sector in coordination with the Egyptian government.
He said that the acute shortage of medical supplies has begun to threaten the lives of many patients who were delayed surgical operations, where eyes, pediatric surgery and cardiac catheterization and oncology operations have ceased in addition to the lack of capabilities and resources in laboratories, medical units, anesthesia and emergency departments.
