MANAMA, May 8 (KUNA) -- Units of the Kuwaiti Army arrived in Bahrain on
Saturday to take part in the "Eagle Resolve-2010" joint military exercise
between the military forces of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states and
the U.S. Central Command (USCENTCOM), due to proceed till the 19th of this
month.
Lieutenant General Mohammad Al-Kanderi, in charge of the arriving troops,
said in remarks to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that the drill is one of the most
important common exercice, aimed at enhancing combat capacity of the forces to
cope with crises, catastrophes and terrorism.
For his part, the Military attach{ at the Embassy of Kuwait in Bahrain
Colonel Ali Suleiman Al-Asaker expressed gratitude to the Bahraini military
command for furnishing the Kuwaiti forces with all needed logistical
facilities.
The maneuvers that had already started on Wednesday would proceed till the
19th of this month. Some Kuwaiti military units had already arrived in the
country for participation in the war games.
Kuwait and Bahrain are member states in the GCC, founded in the early 80s
in shadow of a major war between the regional states, Iran and Iraq.
The GCC, which includes Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman and Qatar, was founded
to bolster cooperation at military and non-military levels and coordinate
policies vis-a-vis external threats.
The United States is a major ally of Kuwait and the other member states of
the GCC. It spearheaded the war of liberation of Kuwait in 1991, driving
troops of the ousted Iraqi Baath regime of the executed dictator, Saddam
Hussein, out of the country, following months of occupation of the Gulf
country.
Kuwait and some GCC countries are bound with military and defense
cooperation accords with Washington. (end)
