Kuwait and Bahrain are member states in the GCC, founded in the early 80s in shadow of a major war between the regional states, Iran and Iraq.
The GCC, which includes Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman and Qatar, was founded to bolster cooperation at military and non-military levels and coordinate policies vis-a-vis external threats.
The United States is a major ally of Kuwait and the other member states of the GCC. It spearheaded the war of liberation of Kuwait in 1991, driving troops of the ousted Iraqi Baath regime of the executed dictator, Saddam Hussein, out of the country, following months of occupation of the Gulf country.
Kuwait and some GCC countries are bound with military and defense cooperation accords with Washington. (end) mz.rk KUNA 081626 May 10NNNN
