RAMALLAH, Sept 28 (KUNA) -- Israeli authorities have imposed an effective
cordon on Monday in the city of Jerusalem and declared a state of security
alert, after Sunday's events that led to injury of dozens of Palestinians.
A large number of Israeli military forces erected checkpoints and staged
intensive patrols on streets leading to Jerusalem and around the old sector of
the city. The troops at the barricades barred young Palestinians from entering
A-Aqsa Mosque.
Palestinian sources in Jerusalem said that although the Israeli troops are
besieging the city, hundreds of Palestinians arrived at Al-Aqsa mosque site in
anticipation of a possible march by hardline Jews to burst into it.
Islamic Waqf confirmed the state state of alert among the mosque guards to
prevent any such attempt.
In Sunday's disturbances, Jewish extremists tried to break into the
courtyards of the mosque, but were confronted by the guards and Palestinian
activists.
Some of the guards fired shots in the direction of the Palestinians,
wounding 42. A number of the activists suffered critical injuries. (end)
