KABUL, July 5 (KUNA) -- Unidentified armed men gunned down a parliamentarian in southern Afghanistan Friday night, said the Interior Minister on Saturday.
Habibullah Khan, member of the Lower House of the Afghan parliament, was assassinated by two unidentified armed men while on way to his house in Zherai district of Kandahar province last night, the ministry said in a statement.
Khan, a former jihadi commander and an influential tribal elder, is the tenth member parliamentarian killed since the election of the parliament in 2005.
Chief of Zherai district, Niaz Mohammad, said the attack was staged by two people last night, but did not hold any group or individial responsible for the assassination.
Meanwhile, Taliban militants dissociated themselves from the attack on the member of parliament.
Taliban spokesman Yousaf Ahmadi said the militants were not responsible for the attack on Habibullah Khan. (end) gk.ema KUNA 051031 Jul 08NNNN
