NEW DELHI, June 17 (KUNA) -- At least 16 rebels of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and one government trooper have been killed in clashes in Northern Sri Lanka.
While two LTTE rebels were killed in Palampiddy in Vavuniya, one LTTE cadre was killed in Kovithunchukulam in the same region yesterday.
Two LTTE men were killed in north-east Welioya yesterday, Sri Lankan Defence Ministry said in a statement at Colombo Tuesday.
One rebel was also killed in Janakapura in Welioya yesterday, the Ministry said.
In a separate incident, two more rebels were killed in Janakapura and north of Kiriibanwewa in Welioya yesterday, the Ministry statement said.
Two rebels were also killed in Jaffna yesterday. One soldier was killed in Welioya yesterday.
As many as six LTTE rebels were killed in Paripakkandal in north-eastern Mannar yesterday, Sri Lanka's Media Centre for National Security said today. (end) dr.bs KUNA 172259 Jun 08NNNN
