ISTANBUL, Aug 10 (KUNA) -- A Turkish soldier was seriously wounded Friday
when a landmine went off as troops were conducting security operations in
Hakkar province, southeast of the country.
In a statement, the Turkish Army Command said an army patrol vehicle was
hit by the mine while conducting a sweep of farmland in the province,
seriously wounding one soldier.
Over the past two months, the Turkish Army has intensified its operations
against the Kurdish Workers Party (PKK), classified as a terrorist
organization by Turkey, the US and the EU.
The conflict between PKK rebels and Turkish authorities, which began in
1984, has so far led to the death of 37,000 people. (end)
