Responsibilities of the Municipal Council

KUWAIT, May 7 (KUNA) -- The Municipal Council, for which elections will be
held on June 2, plays an important role in placing public municipal policies
and plans, as well as approving municipal projects in terms of architectural,
environmental and health aspects.
Responsibilities of the Municipal Council include monitoring the
implementation of laws and regulations related to public health, organization,
buildings, revoking ownership and temporarily seizing property for public
benefit.
Its responsibilities extend to cover the division of land plots, monitoring
public areas, wandering salesmen and issuing licensing of facilities in
cooperation with other bodies.
The council approves projects of construction, beautification and greenery
of cities, islands, roads and public squares, sewage networks, as well as
naming streets and overseeing the establishment of markets, butcheries and
cemeteries.
Annually, the council discusses its budget and closing audit accounts for
the previous fiscal year, looking into municipal-related suggestions of the
government or the National Assembly.
Up to 130,958 voters will be electing their representatives in ten
municipal constituencies. (end)
