Arabs need to play greater role in drafting UNESCO resolutions -- Dr. Hasan
By Bassam Almusallam
PARIS, March 26 (KUNA) -- Chairman of the UNESCO Arab group and Permanent
Delegate of Oman to the organization, Dr. Musa Hasan, urged Arab states on
Friday to play an active role in drafting UNESCO resolutions and conventions
through a greater participation in the international organization meetings.
During an interview with KUNA at his office here, Dr. Hasan described the
Arab activity in the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural
Organization (UNESCO) as "good", referring to several resolution-drafts
adopted by the Arab group during the last executive council session of the
organization.
Dr. Hasan also referred to the Arab Plan committee chaired by the Kuwaiti
Permanent Delegate to the UNESCO and Chairman of the Gulf Cooperation Council
(GCC) group at the organization, Dr. Adurrazag Al-Naifisi.
Dr. Hasan said that the Arab Plan is a multidisciplinary and intersectorial
program which is part of dialogue between cultures and civilizations. It is
implemented by the UNESCO Secretariat, in close cooperation with the UNESCO
Arab group, the Arab League Educational, Cultural, and Scientific Organization
(ALESCO), ISECO and all other relevant organizations.
-- He said that the Arab Plan, approved by the UNECO Executive
Council in its 161st session, is directly in line with the UNESCO mission and
is aimed at highlighting and promoting dialog between Arab civilization and
culture and other civilizations and cultures.
Dr. Hasan said that an Arab-Japanese dialogue is scheduled to start next
May with the participation of several specialists in the Arab-Japanese affairs
from Japan, Arab countries and the UNESCO. The two-day dialogue will open the
door for more similar Arab dialogues with European and other nations.
He added that the Arab group is currently following reports of the UNSECO
mission in Jerusalem over the consequences of the Israeli aggression on the
city which aims at erasing the Arab identity of Jerusalem.
Dr. Hasan also underlined the role of the Arab group in establishing the
"Water Fund" which aims at providing drinking water for countries suffering
from scarcity of water.
The Arab group also came up with initiative aiming at enlightening children
to reserve water through schools education, he added. (end)
