Kuwait Education Min. opens first woman forum

KUWAIT, March 7 (KUNA) -- Kuwait Minister of Education and Minister of Higher Education Dr. Moudhi Al-Humoud opened the first woman forum at the College of Social Science (CSS), Kuwait University, on Monday.
The gathering is organized by the CSS Women's Studies Unit in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) on the eve of the International Women's Day.
The forum gathers a number of notable woman activists and heads of female associations from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states and other parts of the world, Dr. Al-Humoud said in an address to the opening session.
"It's another step on the road to better understanding of the rights of women and achievement of gender parity in the region," she pointed out.
"It focuses on two themes which were not tacked by previous regional events namely the civil rights of single women and violence against women," the minister disclosed.
Meanwhile, CSS Dean Prof. Abdul-Redha Asiri said one of the main features of the 20th century was the long and relentless struggle by women to achieve gender equality.
"The feminist movement won the support of men and was able to make gender parity an internationally-recognized principle. Out of belief in this principle, the CSS launched the Women's Studies Unit," Prof. Asiri added.
On her part, chairperson of the unit Dr. Lubna Al-Qadhi said the forum, the first activity of the unit, aims to involve students of the college in the efforts to promote awareness about woman issues. (end) mda.nfa.gb KUNA 072121 Mar 11NNNN
