ISLAMABAD, Dec 16 (KUNA) -- At least two people, including a police officer, were killed on Tuesday when unknown assailants opened fire at polio vaccinators in Pakistan's northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) province.
The attack took place in Tangai area of Bajaur tribal district, District police in charge, DPO Waqqas Rafiq in a statement to media.
As a result of the firing, the armed attackers targeted the anti-polio campaign killing a police constable and a civilian.
Following the incident, a heavy contingent of police was dispatched to the area where security forces launched raids at various locations to arrest those involved in the attack.
The official said that strict security arrangements have been made in the area during the ongoing anti-polio campaign, and that efforts are underway to apprehend the suspects. No polio workers were harmed in the incident.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif also condemned the attack, expressing grief over the death of the police constable.
He vowed to "bring the perpetrators to justice," stressing that the campaign will continue until the virus is eradicated from the country. The premier also prayed for the "speedy recovery of the injured". (end)
