CAIRO, Dec 9 (KUNA) -- Kuwait on Tuesday renewed its firm commitment to the principles of international humanitarian law and to international and regional efforts aimed at strengthening human rights protection during armed conflicts.
This came in a statement delivered by Assistant Foreign Minister for Human Rights Affairs Sheikhah Jawaher Ibrahim Al-Sabah, on behalf of the Minister of Justice and Chair of the National Committee for International Humanitarian Law, at the 13th meeting of Arab national committees at the Arab League.
Sheikhah Jawaher said Kuwait maintains unwavering faith in international cooperation, especially in human rights, noting that Kuwait's accession to the four 1949 Geneva Conventions in 1967 reflects its early commitment to international obligations.
She called for stronger cooperation among states and regional bodies through expertise exchange and memoranda of understanding to establish shared ground for applying humanitarian law amid accelerating global crises.
She highlighted Kuwait's leading role on missing persons in armed conflicts, citing close cooperation with the ICRC that led to UN Security Council Resolution 2474 (2019) during Kuwait's non-permanent membership.
She also reviewed Kuwait's latest legal developments, including Decree-Law No. 134/2025 on protecting the Red Crescent and Red Cross emblems, Decree-Law No. 154/2025 on missing persons, and Decree-Law No. 156/2025 on international crimes.
She noted that work is underway to study legislation dedicated to protecting cultural property in line with humanitarian law standards.
Sheikhah Jawaher concluded by urging states to fulfill obligations under the Geneva Conventions and relevant UN resolutions, stressing that humanitarian law provides a vital framework for accountability and helps reduce suffering and promote peace. (end) mm.aai
