Sudan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva Ambassador Hassan Hamid
GENEVA, Nov 14 (KUNA) -- Sudan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva Ambassador Hassan Hamid said on Friday that the international community bears a substantial share of responsibility for what he described as the "atrocities and genocide" taking place in Sudan.
This came in a statement during a special session of the UN Human Rights Council on the situation in (El Fasher) held in Geneva where he warned that overlooking the crimes of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has fueled the escalation of the conflict to what he called an "existential war."
The ambassador sharply criticized attempts to equate the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) with what he described "a militia with a criminal record."
He stressed that such a "misguided approach" has given the RSF political and diplomatic support, describing the actions of the militia as "terrorism".
He called on the international community to designate the Rapid Support Forces as a "terrorist group" and to put an end to the violations occurring across his country.
He stressed that Sudan has repeatedly warned for years of the dangers posed by the militia and the weapons it continues to receive in blatant violation of Security Council resolutions most notably Resolution 2736 on lifting the siege of (El Fasher).
The ambassador added that the international community's failure to take decisive measures has allowed grave abuses including targeting civilian infrastructure and mosques and hospitals.
The UN Human Rights Council is convening today's special session on (El Fasher) where is expected to consider a draft resolution establishing an independent mechanism to monitor a ceasefire and launch an inclusive political transition leading to the formation of a democratically elected civilian national government after a civilian-led transitional period.
