KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 7 (KUNA) -- An explosion occurred Friday at a high school mosque belonging to the Indonesian Navy in Kelapa Gading, north of Jakarta during a Friday prayer, injuring at least 54 people, mostly students and teachers.
A press statement by Head of the Navy Public Relations Office, Rear Admiral Tunggul, said the Navy is still gathering field data and will release full details once the investigation is complete.
Jakarta Police Chief Major General Asep Edi Suheri said the explosion's cause is under investigation and confirmed 54 people were hospitalized with injuries and burns of varying severity.
Jakarta Globe quoted a teacher inside the mosque as saying the explosion occurred just after the Friday sermon began, filling the area with smoke as panicked students fled, some crying and collapsing.
Local news footage showed police cordoning off the school as bomb squads searched for more explosives and ambulances transported the injured. (end) aab.ao
