Min. Al-Sumait: Drafts bolstering int'l humanitarian laws' implementation to Fatwa dept.
KUWAIT, July 15 (KUNA) -- Justice Minister Nasser Al-Sumait announced that two national drafts on bolstering the implementation of international humanitarian laws were finalized and referred to the Fatwa (Islamic ruling) department prior to cabinet submission.
The minister, also head of the permanent national committee for international humanitarian law, told KUNA that one of the drafts focused on protection of the Red Crescent emblem and other symbols from abuse during conflicts and crises in accordance with the Geneva Convention.
The other draft focused on international crimes, allowing concerned Kuwaiti judiciary to handle such dangerous violations in accordance with article 17 of the Rome Statute, a treaty established by the International Criminal Court (ICC).
These drafts are within the priorities of the national committee to ensure that Kuwait was up to standard when it came to the implementation of international humanitarian law, he asserted.
The minister expressed gratitude to all experts and members of the committee whether local or international, affirming that the State of Kuwait would continue its efforts to reinforce the notions of respect international humanitarian law within its legal institutes. (end) ns.gta
